About Us.

Our Mission.

The mission of the Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist School is to:

  • Build characters for Christ
  • Foster social, mental, physical, and spiritual development
  • Develop a culture of service
  • Equip students with the skills necessary for high school and beyond.

Our Philosophy.

The Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist School is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide a spiritually oriented education for children. A belief in the existence of the Creator God is fundamental in the philosophy of Seventh-day Adventist schools. We respect His divine authority and recognize His intervention in human affairs. We believe that true education develops the spiritual, mental, and physical powers of each student; preparing them for the joy of service in this life and for the higher joy of service in the life to come. To achieve this goal, we encourage each student to:

  • develop a personal relationship with God and his fellow men as stated in Matthew 2:37-39
  • master the basic academic skills
  • value labor, physical and mental, as the
  • blessing God intended
  • cultivate physical fitness, mental ability, and moral purity as the blessing God intended.

The Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist School  operated in harmony with the guidance and direction of the Office of Education, North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

    History.

Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist School, a private co-educational school, is owned and operated by the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The school is operated as a day school offering a sound secondary education covering grades Pre-K - 8.

    The Foundation

In 1938, Pastor Gerhart Herwick and the parents of the Danish Norwegian Church saw the need to open a school in Bay Ridge that would be easily accessible to their children. The school was organized with the assistance of Louise Kleuser, Educational Superintendent of the Greater New York Conference with Betty Thogunsen as the first teacher. The school began with a one-room classroom in the basement of the church on 50th Street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

    A Brief Closing

Years later, it was closed. In 1962, it reopened under the leadership of Pastor William Goransson and his wife Dolphy who became the first teacher. The school was then held in two classrooms in the basement of the original building. Jack Mentges was the additional teacher.

    New Church, New School

In March of 1964, the Italian-American Church merged with the Danish-Norwegian Bay Ridge Church. The name of the church was changed to The Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist Church. Consequently, this became the origin of the Brooklyn S.D.A. School.

    Classroom Expansions

In 1970, under the leadership of Pastor Halvard J. Thomsen, and the principal Joseph Miller, the school expanded to three classrooms in the 50th Street Church and one additional classroom in Staten Island, where the first and second graders were bussed daily. Due to the overabundance of students and crowded conditions, Pastor Thomsen searched for a new school facility, which was Viking Hall on 8th Avenue and 60th Street. The school expanded to include a Nursery/Kindergarten facility and grades 1-9.

    New Building

Under the leadership of Pastor Glen Hixon, the current school building was purchased at 1260 Ocean Avenue with Yaqub Khan as principal. At this new site a grades 1-8 program was established.

    Pre-K Expansion

In September of 1998 the Pre-K Kindergarten program was re-established under the leadership of Dr. Iola Brown.

    New Principal

In 2023 Loris LaBorde became the new school principal. Using his many years of experience at Adventist Schools he has big plans for the continued growth and expansion of Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist School through fundraising, rebranding, and reorganization.

    Rebranding & New Website

With the help of Ryan Kerbs the school received a much-need facelift with a new brand as well as this new website.

      Aim.

The aim of the school can be summed up in the following quotation:
To restore in man the image of his maker, to bring him back to the perfection in which he was created, to promote the development of body, mind and soul, that the divine purpose in His creation might be realized.
Ellen G. White, Education, page 15
We are thankful to God and everyone who has helped to make The Brooklyn S.D.A. School what it is today.
